The Same Sole Behaves Differently on Different Dirt

Grind names are marketing categories, and they describe the club without describing the ground it will meet. A sole ground for soft, holding turf will bury itself on dormant bermuda over a firm base. A low-bounce sole built for tight lies will dig ruinously in July when everything is lush.

Central Alabama gives a golfer both of those conditions inside the same calendar year, and gives different courses in the same county entirely different bases. A sand-capped private layout and a municipal course on heavy clay are not one fitting problem, and a wedge specified without asking which one you play is specified on a coin toss.

So the session opens with your existing wedges and a hitting surface the club can actually enter, and we record what the ground does to them before selecting anything.

What a divot tells us

Four Readings From the Ground

A divot is a physical record of what the sole did. It is free, it is repeatable, and it is more informative about wedge fit than any single number on a launch monitor.

Reading 01

Depth

How far the sole went in. Deep and short means the club stalled; long and shallow means it rode the surface. Both are correctable with geometry.

Reading 02

Direction

A divot pointing left of target on a straight shot indicates a path and face relationship the wedge is compensating for, and often a lie angle worth correcting.

Reading 03

Taper

Whether the divot deepens or shallows through its length. A divot that gets deeper toward the exit means the trailing edge is dragging and the club is losing speed after impact.

Reading 04

Entry Point

Where the sole first meets the ground relative to the ball. Behind the ball and you need more bounce; ahead of it and less bounce with a lower leading edge will serve you better.

The other half

Loft Ladder, and the Gap Nobody Notices

Modern iron sets have crept strong enough that the pitching wedge frequently sits at 43 or 44 degrees. Golfers then buy a 56 and a 60 because that is what has always been in the bag, leaving a twelve-degree hole exactly where most approach shots into short par fours end up.

We measure the loft of your pitching wedge rather than trusting the stamp, then build the ladder upward from it. Four-degree steps are the usual answer; five works for golfers who do not carry a full set of scoring clubs, and six is almost always a mistake.

Every gap gets converted to yards using your own carry numbers, because degrees are a proxy and yards are the thing you actually need.

Groove life

When a Wedge Is Simply Finished

Wedge grooves wear out, and they do it faster than most golfers expect. A sand wedge that sees regular bunker work and practice will lose meaningful spin inside seventy or eighty rounds, and the loss is gradual enough that nobody notices until a shot that used to check runs eight feet past.

We inspect grooves with a gauge during every wedge session and will tell you plainly when a club has reached the end. Occasionally the answer to a wedge complaint is that the specification is fine and the club is just old, which is a cheaper conversation than the alternative.
