Speed Holdover: What the Face Gives Back on a Miss

Somebody sends me a screenshot roughly once a week. It shows a driver, a ball speed figure, and a question about whether that is good. The honest answer is that I have no idea, because a ball speed number without a strike location attached to it is not a measurement of anything.

A driver posting 158 mph from dead centre is doing what every driver does. The identical 158 from contact three-quarters of an inch out toward the outer corner is a genuinely different event, and it is the kind of thing that ought to decide a purchase. The screenshot never distinguishes between them.

The Figure We Score Instead

Holdover is the number we put on a session sheet. It is straightforward: for a given club, take the average ball speed across every recorded strike and express it as a percentage of that golfer's own centre-strike average with the same club.

A holdover of 96 percent means that across your real pattern — misses included — the club gave back ninety-six percent of what it produces when you catch it flush. A holdover of 89 percent means it gave back eighty-nine. Two clubs can be within a mile an hour of each other at the centre and seven points apart on holdover, and over a season the seven points matter enormously more than the mile an hour.

The figure earns its place for two reasons. It belongs to the pairing of one golfer and one head, which is precisely the thing a fitting exists to establish. And it survives comparison across seasons, so a return visit years later can distinguish between a club that no longer suits you and a delivery that has moved underneath it.

Why the Best Swing Wins the Argument

Nobody has to be dishonest for a fitting to end up anchored on an outlier. It happens structurally. Launch software foregrounds the most recent reading and the maximum; human memory foregrounds the swing that felt effortless; and those two habits reinforce each other until the club is being judged on one event out of forty.

Every driver ever manufactured has one swing in it that would sell it. Whether that swing is repeatable is a separate question, and it is the only one worth asking.

Working from averages helps, though it does not finish the job. An average tells you the spread exists without telling you who produced it — whether the variation belongs to your delivery or to a head that punishes small errors severely. Holdover pulls those apart. Loose strike locations paired with steady percentages point at technique. Tidy strike locations paired with one collapsing zone point at equipment, and equipment is the half of that pair you can buy your way out of.

Building the Map

Holdover cannot be computed without a strike location attached to every reading, so the first thing that happens in a driver session is that the face gets marked. Impact tape for the coordinate, an overhead camera to confirm it. Somewhere around the third block of swings the dots resolve into a shape rather than a scatter.

The face is scored in nine cells, each recorded as a proportion of that golfer's own middle-of-face figure. Three shapes cover most of what comes through the door:

  • Below the middle, drifting outward. Nearly always a club longer than its owner can govern, sometimes a stance set too far away. This is the corner where the great majority of driver heads give back the most, which makes it the corner worth screening candidates against.
  • Inside, near the hosel. Frequently accompanies a left-to-right ball flight. Contact nearer the hosel surrenders less velocity than the outer corner does, but it generates far more sidespin, so the yardage disappears sideways instead of vertically.
  • Above the middle, tight. What stronger players tend to produce, and a shape essentially every current head deals with competently. If this is you, holdover is irrelevant and the session should be about launch conditions.

Do this before you book

Twenty range balls with impact tape stuck to your driver will identify which shape you have. It takes ten minutes, costs nothing, and converts the opening quarter of a session from discovery into confirmation. Peel the tape off, bring it in, and we will start from there.

What We Change First

With the map drawn, the opening lever is club length rather than club model. Shortening a driver by five-eighths of an inch consistently narrows side-to-side scatter and drags the centre of the pattern inward. That recovers more holdover than a head swap does, and the whole intervention is a saw cut plus a few grams in the tip.

For anyone whose contact clusters near the hosel, lie angle is the second lever. Head model is third. The shaft is fourth and last, arriving after the pattern has already stopped moving, which means its role is preservation rather than repair.

Clients are routinely startled that the biggest gain of an afternoon shows up before a single new club has been assembled. So was I, for roughly the first eighty sessions.

The One Number on the Sheet

At the end of a driver session the sheet carries a single holdover figure for the build we settled on, alongside every raw number behind it. It is not published by any manufacturer, it does not appear on a spec sheet, and it is the only figure in the document that tells you what that club will actually do across a round rather than on its best swing of the afternoon.
